The Lonely Elderly

Curamus Haven recognises the loneliness faced by the elderly in our community. Through our befriending services, we offer any lonely individual over the age of 65 the following services:

  • Simply providing face to face companionship
  • Telephone conversations
  • Transportation to certain places such as hospital appointments, shopping and leisure
  • Personal problem solving
  • Signposting to other services that can help
  • Providing weekly activities for elderly groups such as classes for knitting, cooking, card making and other fun activities
  • Fitness programs suitable for the elderly

In an article called the Role and Impact of Befriending, six ways were found in which befriending services can help the elderly and isolated individuals to participate in their community. These were:

  • Using local services and facilities
  • Creating a new social link
  • Developing wider social networks
  • Meeting like-minded people through clubs and groups
  • Meeting people with similar needs and supporting each other
  • Changing social attitudes so that users become accepted and valued as full members of the community in their own right

In essence, this vital service provides a link to the outside world and often acts as a gateway for other services and valuable support to a lot of lonely people in our society. It simply combats LONELINESS.
